Last night before the ferry

The last day of a trip deserves better than a room by the terminal. Sleep at the château, thirty-five minutes from the port, let the children burn off their batteries in the park rather than in hotel corridors — and turn the drive to Cherbourg into one last itinerary instead of a transfer.

Along the east coast, treat yourselves to an oyster lunch at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue facing Tatihou, then loop up through Barfleur, one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages — the granite harbour is worth the stop even in drizzle. To the west, if your ship sails in the evening, the La Hague coastal walks and the Nez de Jobourg make a spectacular farewell to Normandy. Come evening, dine at our neighbours’ — La Table d’Henry is minutes away; the château saves its strength for breakfast.

And if you have two hours left before boarding, the ferry traveller’s best-kept secret: La Cité de la Mer occupies the old transatlantic terminal, a few hundred metres from the ferry berths — the submarine Le Redoutable can be visited with your luggage in the boot.

Breakfast served early for morning sailings — just tell us your crossing time the night before.
