Cherbourg to Disneyland Paris: four hours, one clever stop

Disneyland Paris is about 400 km from the Cherbourg terminal — a little over four hours of motorway, via the A13 and then round Paris on the A86 or the N104 Francilienne to Marne-la-Vallée. On paper it is a straightforward afternoon. In practice, with a car full of children who have been promised Mickey Mouse since February, the last hour in Paris traffic is where holidays fray.

The families who do this well treat the drive as two halves with a night in between. They come off the ferry, drive thirty-five minutes to the château, and let the children loose: the pool in summer, the grounds, the donkeys, a proper dinner in Valognes rather than a service station. In July and August there is even a giant maize maze fifteen minutes away to run them ragged. The next morning everyone is fresh, the car is repacked in daylight, and you reach the park hotels by early afternoon — which is exactly when Disney check-in opens anyway.

It works just as well the other way round. After three or four days of queues and fireworks, a night at a quiet château before the ferry home is the best decompression a family can buy. You sleep, you have breakfast, and the terminal is thirty-five minutes away — no dawn drive across France to catch a mid-morning sailing. Our last night before the ferry itinerary fills the spare morning.

A small piece of honest advice from parents who have done it: leave the château by nine and you will be at the park gates for a late lunch; leave at eleven and you will meet the Paris afternoon traffic. And book the château first — Disney’s own dates are usually fixed long before yours.

Where to sleep

One night each way is what most families need, and our bed-and-breakfast rooms take bookings from a single night, breakfast included. The family bedrooms sleep four. If you would rather bookend Disney with a few slower days by the sea, the cottages start at three nights. Back to the ferry stopover guide.
