Cherbourg’s ferry terminal is on the east side of the harbour, at the Gare Maritime, and it is remarkably easy: follow the “Car Ferry / Gare Maritime” signs from the N13, and you are there. From the château it is thirty-five minutes door to lane, with no town to cross — which is why so many of our guests sleep here the night before they sail.
The times that matter. For cars, both operators open check-in around three hours before departure and close it forty-five minutes before; arriving ninety minutes early is the comfortable habit. With a pet on an Irish sailing, allow two hours for the passport check. Your booking confirmation has the exact figure for your ship, and that figure wins over anything written here.
What to do with a spare morning. Most Irish sailings leave in the afternoon and the UK crossings vary, so you often have half a day to fill after breakfast. Our last night before the ferry itinerary covers it: the Saturday market in Valognes, the Cité de la Mer beside the terminal itself, or a last oyster in Saint-Vaast. If you would rather just get there, the terminal has parking, and the Cité de la Mer is a five-minute walk from the check-in lanes.
A note on the routes as they stand. Since November 2026 the English crossing to Cherbourg is Portsmouth (the Poole route has closed); the Irish routes from Dublin and Rosslare are unchanged. Sailings, ships and timetables shift each season — check the current schedule with your operator before you fix your dates, and book the château to match.
Where to sleep
The night before a sailing is the classic single-night stay: bed and breakfast, an early or a leisurely breakfast depending on your ship, and thirty-five minutes to the lane. Cottages from three nights if you are giving the Cotentin a proper visit first. Back to the ferry stopover guide.
