Where to dine near the château

There is no restaurant at the château, and that is part of what you came for: a quiet house, not a hotel. Breakfast is ours; dinner is a short drive away, and the choice is good. Three things to know before you go out:

Book. Always. None of the places below should be turned up at without a reservation, even on a Tuesday in November. Call from the car on your way down from the ferry — “the château sent us” works. Tables in Normandy are set for 19:30 and kitchens close early (often 20:30–21:00), so aim for 19:30 rather than 20:30.

Sunday and Monday evenings are different. Most of Valognes is closed. Those two nights, go to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue (Le Chasse Marée, La Marina) or Cherbourg (Café de Paris, L’Equipage), which are open every day.

Opening days change with the season and the owners’ holidays. The days below are the usual ones; the phone number is the truth.

Standing. One symbol per house: ✦ simple and good (crêperie, bistro, brasserie) · ✦✦ a proper table · ✦✦✦ gastronomic. Our judgement, not a guide’s; prices follow the same scale.
